- What kind of wealth does Zakat pay for?
The wealth on which Zakat is to be paid is: Personal wealth and property (if it exceeds the nisab and is not for personal use, such as a house or jewelry); liquid assets or from which a profit is anticipated; agricultural produce; livestock; treasures, mines, etc.
In addition, there are three main conditions for Zakat to be obligatory on these types of wealth: that the property be exclusive, growth (actual or potential), the passage of one year of zakat.
- How much is paid?
Zakat is 2.5% of the total sum of wealth that can be calculated monetarily, provided that the nisab is exceeded.
The nisab, or minimum amount, is the equivalent of 85 grams of gold (20 gold dinars) or 595 grams of silver (200 silver dirhams) in the local currency this would be equivalent to 5.380€ in gold and 476€ in silver, as of 5/06/2024..
This minimum of wealth must have been held for one year. According to the consensus, the nisab will be calculated in gold, therefore the minimum amount to be valued in local currency is stipulated at 5.380€. If one has possession of gold or silver the nisab is half a dinar for every 20 dinars and 5 dirhams for every 200, or its equivalent in grams. The Zakat of agricultural products is 5% or 10% depending on the form of irrigation.
Zakat from livestock depends on the type and quantity.
Zakat from gold and silver mines and treasures found is one fifth.
- How is it paid?
The traditional way and in accordance with the practice of the Prophet, peace be upon him, is that the Zakat of wealth that is visible (crops, livestock, etc.) is taken by the local authority.
We must remember that Zakat is an obligation and a right of the poor, not a voluntary gift.
Regarding the Zakat of monetary wealth, it is also given to the authority after determining whether one has enough wealth to pay it.
- How is FMS paid?
The Seville Mosque Foundation has put into operation a system of collection and distribution of Zakat to make it easier for Muslims in Seville to comply with this obligatory pillar and to ensure a way for those who are entitled to receive it to do so.
This is something that has been done for years, and its benefit has reached hundreds of people, but in a limited and private way and now we want to open it to all Muslims in Seville.
The operation of the system is very simple.
If you have to pay the Zakat, you think you have to pay it or you are not sure, you can contact us by phone or email and we will put you in contact with the right person with knowledge of the Fiqh of Zakat who can advise you in your personal case, in a totally confidential manner.
Once the relevant assessments have been made, if you do indeed have to pay Zakat, you can give it directly to the Seville Mosque Foundation by transfer, cash, check or any other form.
The Seville Mosque Foundation has an open list of people in need of Zakat and all Zakat collected is distributed according to the prescribed categories.
This list is open to the registration of any person who is a potential recipient of Zakat with the only condition that he/she is a Muslim and resides in Seville.
In the same way the Seville Mosque Foundation keeps a record of all the people who give Zakat and the amounts.
Once a year the Foundation will publish a document that will be made public where all the Zakat collected and delivered will be specified, maintaining the confidentiality of the identity of those who deliver and receive it.
