Reception of delegation from Muhammadiyah, Indonesia

Yesterday we had the pleasure to receive in the mosque a delegation of Muhammadiyah from the province of East Java, accompanied by the counselor of the Indonesian Ambassador to Spain, Pak Bayu Hari.

The delegation visited several cities in Spain and seeks to establish links between your organization and local institutions, organizations and universities. They also offer scholarships for students at their universities in Indonesia, which will be made public once we receive the details.

It was an honor to receive them and we hope that this visit will serve to reinforce the excellent relations of our institution with Indonesia.

Muhammadiyah is a leading Islamic non-governmental organization in Indonesia. The organization was founded in 1912 by Ahmad Dahlan in the city of Yogyakarta as a socio-religious movement that to this day continues to support local culture and promote religious tolerance in Indonesia. Some of its higher education institutions are attended by mostly non-Muslims, especially in the provinces of East Nusa Tenggara and Papua. The group also runs a large chain of charitable hospitals, and operated 128 universities in the late 1990s.

In 2008, Muhammadiyah was considered the second largest Islamic organization in Indonesia with 29 million members. Although Muhammadiyah leaders and members are often active in shaping politics in Indonesia, Muhammadiyah is not a political party. It has been engaged in social and educational activities.
