114. SURA DE LOS HOMBRES

Mequi. It has 6 aleyas and descended after the sura of “The Dawn Rayar”.

In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate.

(1) Say, “I take refuge in the Lord of men.

(2) The King of Men.

(3) The God of men.

(4) Of the evil of the whisper* that hides*.

* [Many commentators explain that what is expressed as the act of whispering refers to Shaiṭán, the subject of that act, and can therefore be translated as “whisperer”.]

* In Arabic “al-jannas”, one of the names of Shaiṭán. At the root of the word is the meaning of going back, since Shaiṭán goes back when man remembers Allah, whispering back to him when he forgets him].

(5) He who whispers in men’s breasts

(6) and exists among geniuses and among men.
