108. SURA AL KAWTHAR – SURA DE LA ABUNDANCIA

SURAH OF ABUNDANCE

Mequí. It has 3 verses and descended after the surah of “Those who gallop”.

In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate.

(1) Verily, We have given Thee Abundance.*

  • [Al-Kauzar, also named after one of the rivers of the Garden. And it has also been said that it refers to the pool (ḥauḍ) of the Prophet, to whom Allah gives His grace and peace, in the Hereafter.]

(2) Therefore pray to your Lord and offer sacrifices. (3) Really it is he who detests you, who will be deprived (of all good). *

  • [This verse descended on al-‘As ibn Wail, who called the Prophet (may Allah give him His grace and peace), “abtar”, which in Arabic applies to one who has no posterity; i.e., one who has no male children and his memory is lost, alluding to the death of one of his sons.

The root of the word means to cut and hence to have translated it as to be deprived or separated from all good.]
