The Seville Mosque Foundation recently embarked on a deeply moving and spiritually enriching trip to Fez, Morocco, from November 15 to 17. This trip, elegantly facilitated by the invitation of Shaykh Idris Fihri, Imam Khatib of the Qarawiyyin Mosque and Vice Dean of Qarawiyyin University, was a profound experience for all who participated.
The core of the trip was centered on the dhikr (remembrance of God) sessions that were held in the Zawiya of Sidi Abdelkader al-Fassi, a space that radiates serenity and spiritual energy. Sheikh Abdalhaqq Bewley was also present. Friday’s Jumu’ah prayer at the magnificent Qarawiyyin Mosque was an especially moving experience.
Participants had the unique opportunity to attend Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) classes taught by Shaykh Idris Fihri himself at the Qarawiyyin Mosque, one of the oldest universities in existence and continuously operating in the world.
A visit to the tomb of Sidi Ali al-Jamal included the recitation of Surah Yasin and Du’a Nasiri, a deeply moving and traditional practice.
The trip fostered a strong sense of community among the participants, creating lasting bonds through shared experiences of faith, learning, and cultural immersion. The warmth and hospitality of the people of Fez left an indelible mark on everyone.
The trip extended beyond simply sightseeing. It represented a pilgrimage of the heart, seeking spiritual renewal, enrichment of knowledge, and a deeper connection to Islamic heritage in a vibrant cultural environment. The atmosphere in Fes, described by many as a “fortress of the Din” brimming with spiritual energy and deep human kindness, resonated deeply with everyone.
The trip was overwhelmingly positive, full of light and blessings from start to finish. The experience of being in Fes, particularly participating in the dhikr led by Shaykh Idris Fihri at the Qarawiyyin Mosque, was deeply moving and had a significant impact. The whole experience was infused with baraka (divine blessings), leaving everyone eager to return soon. The vibrant souks of Fez showed the incredible kindness and generosity of its people.
O Allah, we thank you for the blessings and opportunities granted during our trip to Fes. May this experience strengthen our faith, deepen our understanding, and inspire our lives of service and devotion. We pray for your continued blessings upon the people of Fez and for the continued prosperity and well-being of the Qarawiyyin Mosque. Amin.
