On July 2, 2024, the Global Council for Tolerance and Peace (GCTP) held a major conference at the historic Real Alcazar in Seville. Entitled “The Role of Religious Leaders in Promoting Tolerance and Peace,” the event brought together leading religious figures, academics, politicians and peace advocates from around the world.
The Royal Alcazar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its impressive architecture combining Christian and Moorish influences, provided the perfect backdrop for this crucial dialogue. In the presence of distinguished religious leaders from around the world and high-ranking political and parliamentary figures, participants engaged in open and respectful conversations, highlighting successful initiatives in which religious leaders have effectively promoted peace and tolerance.
The conference emphasized the need for concrete action plans and strategies that religious leaders can implement in their communities. It also focused on strengthening global networks of leaders committed to peace-building and interfaith cooperation.
Key outcomes of the event included the announcement of the Religious Leaders Council for Tolerance and Peace, the development of practical guidelines for religious communities and enhanced networking opportunities for global peace efforts. The conference underscored the vital role of religious leaders in fostering a more tolerant and peaceful world.
Veteran Emirati diplomat and parliamentarian, H.E. Ahmed Al Jarwan, who previously served as Speaker of the Arab Parliament and is a member of the UAE Federal National Council, currently chairs the GCTP and the Confederation of Arab Experts. Since its establishment in 2017, the GCTP has forged strong partnerships and signed agreements with numerous national parliaments, prestigious institutions, NGOs and international organizations, including the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the League of Arab States.
The conference marked a significant step toward building a more harmonious and fraternal international community. Religious leaders demonstrated their potential to address some of today’s most pressing challenges, promoting a world where diversity is valued and peace prevails.
The Seville Mosque Foundation is proud to have participated in this historic event and remains committed to supporting efforts that promote tolerance and peace worldwide.
