Heart health is one of the inner tools that guarantee the good life in this world, and the attainment of Paradise in the Hereafter.
Allah, Exalted be He, says:
“It is a day when wealth and children will be of no avail, but whoever comes to Allah with a sound heart.”
The Muslim has to strive to purify his heart from reprehensible attributes and deadly diseases, and to fill it with praiseworthy and noble attributes. Among the causes of heart disease are: ignorance in religious matters, misunderstanding of religious matters, deviation from the spiritual path, following the passions of the ego, being completely immersed in sin, neglect in the practice of remembering Allah, forgetting the Abode of the Otherworld, frequenting the company of those who can harm one’s heart, hypocrisy, pretense, bad opinion about Allah and His servants, envy, pride, and so on.
Among the effective remedies for peace of heart and health, so that the sakina may descend upon him and he may taste the sweetness of faith, are: love for Allah and in Allah, for Allah, the Exalted be He, has said:
“Those who believe are those who love Allah most intensely.”
And our noble prophet (upon him be the blessing and the Peace) says: “There are three things. Whoever possesses them will taste the sweetness of faith: May Allah and His Messenger be loved to him more than anything else; that if he loves, he loves only for Allah’s sake; that I hate to return to unbelief in the same way that I would hate to be thrown into the fire.”
Malik ibn Dinar said: “Woe to the people of this world who come out of it without tasting the best that is found in it.”
They asked him, “And what is the best thing in this world?”
He replied, “Love of Allah, knowledge of Allah, and the practice of remembering Allah.”
One of the means to attain love for Allah is the recitation of the Qur’an and meditation on its meanings.
Allah, Exalted be He, says: “You who believe: an admonition has come to you from your Lord, and a healing for what is in the breasts, a guide and a mercy for the believers.”
One approaches Allaah by means of meritorious voluntary acts after performing the obligatory ones, purity of intention in one’s deeds, so that they are done only for Him, (may He be glorified), the vigilance of the soul and calling oneself to account.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) says: “The intelligent one is the one who calls himself to account, and acts for what is after death. A fool is one who follows his ego in its passions, and expects Allah to fulfill his desires.”
To remain steadfast on the straight path is one of the things that provide tranquility to the soul.
Allah (Exalted be He) says: “Whoever follows My guidance will not go astray or be unhappy. And whoever turns away from My remembrance will have one. Among the signs of health of the heart is that man finds the sweetness of faith and pleasure in acts of worship, enjoying them more than he enjoys the pleasures of this world. Another sign is that man feels sadness and deep inner pain when he is unable to perform meritorious voluntary acts. One of the holy servants of Allah said: “He who rejoices in serving Allah, all things rejoice in serving him, and he whose eyes rest on Allah, the eyes of the whole world rest on him.” Delivered on Friday, July 21, 2017 by Imam Said Errazidi At the museum of the Mosque Foundation of Seville, in the Plaza Ponce de Leon, Seville.
