Reflections on the 23rd anniversary of the Great Mosque of Granada

From 9 to 12 July 2026, we had the profound honour and privilege of attending the Mausim in Granada, which celebrated the 23rd anniversary of the Great Mosque of Granada. Organized under the theme “The Muslim Community in Europe: A Look Forward,” this beautiful four-day gathering was a monumental event where hearts, minds, and spirits came together.

We wish to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation to our hosts, the Fundación Mezquita de Granada. Their immense warmth and hospitality made us truly feel at home, and we are deeply grateful for their continued brotherhood and for making our community an active part of this blessed occasion.

A beautiful reminder of the Islam we share

The weekend was a vibrant testimony to a living Islam: an Islam rooted in kindness, beauty and harmony with one’s fellow man. The program offered deep spiritual and intellectual nourishment, starting on Thursday with a Women’s Meeting that featured the inspiring presentation by Ibtisaam Ahmed, entitled “Beyond labels: discovering the feminine in the age of the image”.

Friday marked the Mosque’s official anniversary, at a party open to the neighborhood and tourists, with cakes and refreshments for all attendees and a moving concert by the Hamid Akhbar Sufi Ensemble. On Saturday and Sunday, we were able to enjoy fundamental conferences on the future of our communities in Europe. It is worth highlighting the masterful presentation by our respected Ustadh Abdel Ghani Melara, entitled “The reality of Islam, a necessity for the human being of this time”, which was followed by an emotional night of Dhikr that united all the attendees in remembrance. Among them, Luqman Nieto offered an inspiring talk on the crucial importance of living in community, providing a deeply enriching perspective. The event closed on Sunday beautifully with Shaykh Abdalhaqq Bewley’s reflections on “Islam in expansion” and a final recitation of the Qur’an and Du’as at the Al-Kawtar farmhouse.

A destination point for Seville

For us, participation in this anniversary comes at a truly significant crossroads. At a time when we face immense pressure and responsibility around our own establishment and efforts to build a solid foundation here in Seville, this trip felt like a true Destination point.

Seeing the prosperous and harmonious example set by the Great Mosque of Granada has been a vital reminder of why we do what we do. He underlined the reality that our efforts are not only for ourselves, but for our entire environment. Grenada stands as a shining beacon of how an Islamic community can enrich its environment, driving us forward in our mission to contribute to a more harmonious, peaceful and understanding society.

We pray to Allah to continue to bless, protect and uplift the Granada Mosque Foundation, and to further strengthen the unbreakable bonds of brotherhood between our two communities. Amin.
