Definition of the Qibla Categories: FUNDACION Timelines: Mezquita

A fundamental milestone in the development of the project has been the precise determination of the orientation of the qibla (orientation towards Mecca) for the mosque of the Islamic Cultural Centre of Seville. Although current technology facilitates this process, we wanted to approach it with the rigor it deserves, combining traditional methods with the most advanced techniques to obtain an exact and consensual definition.

The process was directed by Professor Yahia Olmedo of the University of Granada, in the traditional determination of the qibla according to the Sunnah, with the technical assistance of Mimoun, a surveyor from Seville, and the presence of Alia Gutiérrez and Ibrahim Hernández on behalf of the Foundation. Thanks to this interdisciplinary work, the exact direction to Mecca from our terrain was precisely established, providing an exact basis for orientation. This moment, charged with spiritual significance and technical rigour, marks a before and after in our project, ensuring that its orientation responds to both religious requirements and the highest technical standards.
